Blue Ox Lodge # 26 Issue No. 1

January/FebCHIEFLY SPEAKING

My Fellow Arrowmen,

As many of you may very well know, our winter event this year was held at the Rochester YMCA. It was pretty much a marginal success. I know that we could have had many more members that could have attended. For the people that were there, I believe that the general concensus was that it was a good time. We opened up the basketball gym, the raquetball courts, the pool, the game room, and other such areas. It was also nice to bring back

an event that we had in the past. About four years ago was the first time that we actually had the Y-Night. For a few years, we decided that we

would give snow-tubing at Ironwood Springs a try. This year we decided that it might be good to bring back the Y-Night just to get a change. We

will also hold next year's winter event at the YMCA. It will prove to be a good time. I challenge you to try to find a little time in your busy schedule to come on out and have a good time! We'll see you all next year.

Yours in Brotherhood,

Marshall E. Ogren

Lodge Chief

National Order of the Arrow Conference

Eight youth leaders and 5 adults from Blue Ox Lodge have registered to attend the National Order of the Arrow Conference in Ames Iowa. The conference will be 2-6 August 1998.

The conference goals are to train lodge members for leadership. The bi-annual meeting being held in Iowa will be the closest to home for quite so time.

Beside the training, nationwide fellowship and inter lodge competitions will be held. Our lodge is entering the OA Jeopardy, and looking into other endeavors. We will keep you posted on the trip as we make further progress.

Contingency leader

National Leadership Seminar

On April 3-5 three Blue Ox Lodge officers, Justin Malloy, Josh Lessard, and Karl Kruger, along with 50 other Arrowmen from around the Central Region attended the National Leadership Seminar in Winona, Minnesota. They were instructed on various forms of Leadership and ways to handle different situations, as well as how to build trust, communication, and honesty with in the lodge. Ryan King, Central Region Chief; Brandon Fessler, Western Region Chief; Mat Milleson, National Chief; and Clyde Mayers, National Order of the Arrow Director as well as other National Committee Members, lodge chiefs and advisors were on staff for the energetic weekend. The National Leadership Seminars are held 12 times a year nation wide, three times in each region, and are considered the pinnacle for Boy Scout Leadership Training. The NLS program is fun as well as educational and I recommend all Arrowmen to attend a NLS in the future.

Burning Issues

Q: "I've never been to a National Order of the Arrow Conference; what do lodges do for a Founders Day Booth?"

A: Traditionally lodges share unique things about their lodge with other lodges from around the country.

If you have a burning issue e-mail it to Blue Ox Lodge. There will also be a box at spring conclave where you can deposit those issues.

My Brothers:

Summer is almost here, and you know what that means: summer camp! Now, I know many of you are going to camp already, or have a job. But what if you could have the best of both worlds? I'm talking about serving as a staff member at Gamehaven Scout Reservation. In the past, the Blue Ox Lodge has had a proud tradition of its members serving as camp staff. Let's keep that tradition alive. We are looking for Scouts, age 16 and older, to serve as staff. This is a paid position, with competitive pay, as well as room and board. With our new camp, we have a great opportunity to build some great new traditions. If you are interested in serving as a Camp Staff member, call

Jim Goerend or Gary Hanson at the Scout Office, at (507) 287-1410 or write to:

1124 111/2 Street SE, Rochester, MN 55904-4097

Remember, the Order exists to promote Scout Camping. What better opportunity than Camp Staff?! Call soon!

Yours in Brotherhood,

Robby Wilkinson

Junior Leader Training

This great opportunity to get some training or to apply what you have already learned will be held from June 21 to 27 at Gamehaven Scout Reservation. Jim Ryder will be the Scoutmaster and is looking for additional adult leadership. He will also be looking for about 15 youth to fill positions from trainers to patrol guides to SPL and ASPL. If you have any interest in joining our group for the week please contact Russ Mullert at the Scout Office.
