Make a Memory & Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America

In 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America have turned an adventure in the great outdoors into one of the most effective leadership and character development classrooms in history. Their programs provide extremely diverse and flexible educational opportunities for boys of all ages and have established settings that enable adult mentoring of youth and peer mentoring withing groups. They facilitate the development of lifelong friendships and provide countless young men with the experiences of a lifetime. Scouting's rich history inspires jubilant celebration of their 100th Anniversary.
In honor of the 100th anniversary, a vast assortment of activities have been planned. Some reach across our nation and some are unique to Gamehaven Council. Some have already begun and some are still ahead. Find a few that appeal to you, or challenge yourself to participate in all of them. But whatever you do - participate and celebrate.
Council

People 17 and older may donate while youth 16 years old may donate with a parent’s permission. The blood drive will run during February and March.
Centennial Forest Project for Gamehaven Scout Reservation (GSR). BSA partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to sell trees as part of the 2010 Generations Connection. For every tree that is purchased, another will be planted in the Flathead National Forest (near Kalispell, MT) to restore an area damaged by fire. Two trees for the price of one! Through this program, Gamehaven Council organized a Centennial Forest project for Gamehaven Scout Reservation (GSR). Legacy Sugar Maples will be planted at GSR. The trees will be a nice addition to the camp, and eventually, we will be able to tap the trees and make maple syrup. The new trees will be 2 to 4 feet tall. The Centennial Forest will be marked with a commemorative plaque recognizing the contributions of all those who purchased and planted the trees. Certificates were available at the Council office if the trees were puchased "in honor of" someone. Watch for more information about the tree planting ceremony.
Tree Planting Ceremony
Gamehaven's Centennial Forest will have 113 trees! These trees were planted on Saturday, May 1st at 9 AM at Gamehaven Scout Reservation. Thank you to all who purchased trees. If you would still like to add a tree or two to the forest, you may do so by contacting the Arbor Day Foundation and order trees directly from them. Once you have the tree(s), contact the Camp Ranger to make arrangements to plant your tree. If you would like to plant your tree on May 1st as part of the Tree Planting ceremony, please email Faith Zeller.
National
Generation Connection Trace the role Scouting has had in your family. Identify the members of your family that have been involved in Scouting and create a family tree at the Generations Connection. Plant a tree on Arbor Day in celebration of the Scouts who are part of your family tree. Through a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, BSA 100th Anniversary trees will be available to families and communities to plan and nurture together for generations to come. Generations Connection runs from April 2009 - December 2010.
National Hall of Leadership Take time to remember someone who had an impact on your Scouting experience. Maybe it is an adult leader. Maybe it is a boy who accomplished amazing things for someone his age. You probably have a good story to tell about him. It is doubtless a story worth sharing. Please take a little time to tell the story through the National Hall of Leadership. Your story could be chosen as one of the best stories submitted. The National Hall of Leadership runs from February 2009 - February 2010.
Earn the 100th Anniversary version of special merit badges or segments through the Year of Celebration, Century of Making a Difference patch and ribbons. Individuals, including Scouts, volunteers leadership, and Scouting alumni can earn patches by demonstrating involvement in five of Scouting's core values: leadership, achievement, community service, character, and the outdoors. This program runs from September 2009 to December 2010.
Go to Minneapolis on May 15 or 16 to see Adventure Base 100. Adventure Base 100 is a traveling display of Boy Scout history and vision for the future.
There are even more opportunities including scout craft challenges, and baseball outings. Watch for more information this winter and spring.
You can participate in the 2010 National Jamboree through A Shining Light Across America. During one evening of the national jamboree, a Webcast will connect millions of Scouts in communities across the country and around the world, bringing together the entire Scouting family for a single opportunity to celebrate. Don’t miss your chance to be part of a 2010 Jamboree event. (Gamehaven details not yet available.)
